Cineplexx: Automated Testing with Drvless
The Cineplexx Group is an international cinema chain operating in twelve countries – primarily across Southern and Southeastern Europe. An IT team based in Vienna is responsible for the entire software landscape, including the website, POS application, and mobile apps.
Sabine Ringhofer, CIO of the Cineplexx Group, explains:
“We manage our entire software landscape from Vienna. That means we have a lot to test – and in many different languages.”
New releases with features and bug fixes are deployed roughly every two weeks, each requiring extensive regression testing. However, manual testing is time-consuming and error-prone.
Objective
To reduce manual testing efforts and ensure stable releases, Cineplexx looked for a test automation solution that could automate key use cases such as ticket purchasing, reservations, and payments. The goal was also to make testing scalable across different countries, languages, and layouts. In 2023, Cineplexx decided to adopt OBJENTIS Drvless Automation.
Implementation of Drvless
Isabel Weilguny, responsible for IT applications, says:
“We discovered Drvless at conferences and quickly realized it fit our needs perfectly. It uses graphical recognition and dynamically adapts to UI changes.”
Drvless enables the creation and execution of automated tests without programming knowledge. Reusable execution lists allow sequential testing, and tests can be repeated with varying parameters, such as different ticket types or seat maps.
“If we had to test everything manually, it would take significantly more time. Now we can create a test case once and run it as often as needed – across different devices and with various parameters,” explains Weilguny.
Onboarding and Support
The introduction of Drvless was supported by the Objentis team. Together, they created the first test case, and the Cineplexx team received training as well as a customized user manual.
“The manual is very well structured and clearly explains how to build test cases. And whenever we had questions, the Objentis team was always available,” says Weilguny. She also highlights the smooth update process: “Before each release, we receive a short summary of new features and a detailed list of bug fixes. Updates are done remotely – and so far, everything has worked flawlessly.”
Results
According to the Cineplexx IT team, the use of Drvless has delivered measurable improvements:
- Time savings: around 20 hours per week by reducing manual testing.
- Higher stability: repeatable and reliable test runs.
- Relief for the IT team: allowing focus on more complex tasks.
- Easy update management: smooth remote updates without interruptions.
“Drvless saves us an enormous amount of time and frees our team from routine tasks. The tests run reliably and consistently,” emphasizes Ringhofer.
OUTLOOK
Cineplexx plans to expand automated testing to additional countries and extend mobile test coverage. The company also sees potential in using Drvless for testing and monitoring other business processes in the future.
“We currently use Drvless mainly for testing, but the possibilities go far beyond that,” says Weilguny.
